Working with Iron
We will expand this section of our website in the coming months to hopefully build up a resource of information on the Blacksmith's craft. Please check back regularly for updates.
At Newton Forge we keep the traditional skills of the Blacksmith alive. Much of the decorative metal work you see in our towns and cities today is composed of mass produced components that are welded together and passed off as 'traditional'. Whilst modern metal manufacturing techniques have their place, and indeed we utilse them when appropriate in our work, you cannot better the look and feel of a piece of work that is forged, jointed and assembed using age old skills. In our heritage restoration work especially, it is essential to work with the time honoured methods to ensure that the work is faithful to the original and none of the historical integrity is lost.
When looking at a piece of wrought ironwork some of the features that distiguish it as traditionally made are listed below.
Traditional Forging & Jointing Techniques
- Collars/Clips
- Tennon joints
- Forge welding
- Riveting
- Tapping threads
