Cast Iron
Cast iron is an amazing material and has so many uses. It had a huge impact when it first came into use on a large scale. Unlike wrought iron, by making a pattern in a material such as wood you can recreate as many copies of a shape as you wish. For mass manufacture and production of large quantities of detailed work at reasonable cost this process is fantastic. It has a great resistance to corrosion and heat and is incredibly strong in compression. It’s draw backs are that it is prone to cracking and an expensive method for producing a “one off”.
Much of the decorative metalwork you see in our towns and cities is a mix of wrought and cast iron, with the properties of each combining beautifully to extend the structural and aesthetic capabilities of the materials by themselves. Newton Forge can bring the materials together through our close links with a number of foundries. We are able to create new casting patterns or copy original sections in ordinary grey or ductile iron. We can supply a wide variety of cast architectural metalwork from finials and posts to gates, railing and roof structures. We are also able to repair cast iron.
